Writingforwords asked…

First: I spelled recent “resent” in the last question I asked you. When I saw it, when you replied, a piece of me sort of died inside.

1. What’s your favourite genre to write?

Young adult. If you count that as an genre. I see it as a age group, but in a book store it’s considered a genre. So, I have to say that first and foremost I am a young adult author by nature.

But, the actual genre’s that I have most enjoyed writing in are contemporary and dystopian. To be even more specific I like writing about ‘coming of age’. I like to tell stories about those who are going through a journey of self discovery. It’s generally drama based, rarely comical.

5. Why do you write?

I write because it is the only thing I can see myself doing. It’s the only thing that makes me truly and irrevocably happy. It is the only thing I do that makes me feel as though I have a purpose.

Writing validates my existence. I know that when I am gone my words and thoughts will remain. Even when they are destroyed and forgotten. I will have given something to the world that was from the deepest part of me.

I write because I want to reach someone in that way that only books can. Reach them through my pages and tell them that I understand them, without having to meet them, and that that are not alone. Because books have saved me time after time from that lonely feeling. And I owe them at least one lifetime to say thank you.

I can’t say enough on why I want to write. It’s not even a want anymore. It’s a need.

8. What’s the farthest you’ve ever gotten with one of your ideas?

That would be my current project. My dystopian novel is at 60k (plus some) and there will be a book two. Maybe three… four… who knows how many. It’s the first story that has truly demanded me to write it and I love the feeling.

6. What levels/kinds of education in the field have you had?

College. It’s sort of my major… was… will be. Ah, school and I are not the best of pals.

Can I count writers group? I want to. I’ve learned so much from those guys and gals.

10. What do you like most about your writing?

When I reread my stuff, the thing I like most is feeling that if I was in high school still, I would connect to these stories. I like my voice for the young adult audience. I don’t think I sound preachy, or pretentious, or like I’m faking it. I feel like I sound like myself from high school. Only with the addition spell check.

21. Do you believe there is such thing as a “bad book?”

Yes and no. Nothing a good red pen and some harsh criticism couldn’t fix.

Like, Twilight has poorly developed characters but it was still a fun ‘junk food’ novel. Lord of the Rings has bogged with lukewarm dialogue but it’s still a fantastic epic. And every novel has simple mistakes that somehow got by the author and agent and editor and who ever else.

I think there are flawed books. Books that I might change. Books that I wish had gotten one or two more edits before they hit the print button. But, bad? I don’t know. That’s relative.
